Whether we’re looking at a one-off, short-term event or a rather permanent alteration of the marketplace can be argued. However, what isn’t open to interpretation is that the threat of broader iPhone distribution here in the U.S. is already negatively impacting on Android sales.

In the smartphone space, whereas the devices themselves continue to gain new features and functionality, the carriers seem to be taking their product development cues from the airline industry with new restrictions and fees adding up almost daily. Verizon’s “a little less mimicry” of AT&T’s $30 unlimited iPhone data plans is a case in point.

It seemed to take AT&T forever before they finally let iPhone users tether their devices to provide data for their laptops, but Verizon is going to be a different story. They will come out of the box with a tethering plan.

Cupertino unquestionably leads the global tech industry, right? Well, true to a point. So, like a lot of really big companies, the mothership spends much of its time reacting to trends rather than leading them, and today’s news that the company finally started promoting its App Store via Twitter is a fine example of that.
