Mobile Safari is fast. Android, Blackberry not so much

February 28, 2011

Increasingly, mobile computing is where it’s at as people take their work on the road, as well as the couch. If you’re gonna get anything done while out and about, then getting around the interwebs at maximum speed is key and Apple’s WebKit-based browser is best of the best.

Consumer Reports: The could, sort of, might antennagate

February 28, 2011

People, tens of million of them love the iPhone 4 — it’s far and away the best selling smartphone on the planet. Whereas the AT&T version has what amounts to a non-issue with the antenna (i.e. get a case or don’t hold it that way), the Verizon iPhone has an even lesser issue. For whatever reason, Consumer Reports just can’t let it go.

Verizon cunningly avoids iPhone hype

February 27, 2011

Verizon iPhone sales not meeting expectations, coming in low? Not so says Big Red’s top dog and, in fact, it’s the best selling device in the carrier’s history, though you probably hadn’t noticed as the carrier has done everything it could to avoid generating buzz.

An eye opener for Nokia

February 24, 2011

For ordinary folk that own a Windows Phone 7, it was just another day living in Redmond’s shadow. For Nokia, which is laying thousands of software developers ahead of the roll out of Microsoft’s smartphone software on a majority of its devices, the failed update was a nasty foretaste of the future.

Verizon iPhone sales lackluster

February 23, 2011

There aren’t a lot of numbers out hinting at how many Verizon iPhones have sold so far. The data that has come out of third-party sources is incomplete, yet points to disappointing at best results. Further, and I’m gonna beat this drum, Verizon and Apple keeping silent on the subject only deepens the growing suspicion.

‘Cheap’ iPhones for Apple Store workers

February 22, 2011

When I was at a Verizon Wireless Store last week, several long faces told me employees weren’t yet allowed to purchase the iPhone 4 — more the merrier for customers. Their Apple Store counterparts, however, aren’t being denied and the details show there are savings to be had.

iAds are down, iAds are up

February 18, 2011

As is often the case with Apple, when you look at the volume picture, commodity vendor “X” appears to have the advantage. However, if you follow the money rather than slavishly traipse after the herd, the picture changes radically — mobile advertising could be a case study in that phenomenon.

WSJ says, yes. NYT says, no iPhone nano

February 18, 2011

From the perspective of cost, an iPhone nano makes perfect sense. In terms of usability, it’s rather more difficult to get your head around what Apple could cut and still have a viable product. Then again, if anyone can that diamond, it’s Apple el supremo, medical leave or not.

Apple spreads the subscription love

February 15, 2011

It started with Rupert Murdoch’s The Daily and is now being extended to digital magazines, video, music and, yes, other newspapers. The terms are the same and now it remains to be seen whether other players will be attracted to the platform.

Verizon iPhone 4% and rising

February 14, 2011

On the Monday after the launch neither Verizon nor Apple have seen fit to tell us how many have sold, which is a very, very interesting omission. That said, people are still trying to reckon that number from the available breadcrumbs — let the guessing begin.
