Developer shift to Android? Even if true, who cares…

March 5, 2011

Phandroids versus iPhonies — let the conflagration build! For some people every infinitesimal shift back or forth in the supposed mobile operating system war between Apple and Google is worth at least is worth at least a few hundred words, especially for the lack of better things to write about on a Friday.

Katherine Noyes of PCWorld must have been hoping to kindle a weekend flamewar as she posted, “Android Skills Outshine iPhone Expertise in Developer Hiring,” undoubtedly on her way out the door to drinks.

[A]s of March 1, there were 987 open positions requesting Android skills listed on job board Dice.com, compared with 970 jobs seeking iPhone expertise … The bottom line? Apple’s head start notwithstanding, the iPhone is well on its way to becoming a niche device.

Um, yeah, that just flows.

Some people might be shocked to learn that more people drives Fords than Mercedes or Toyotas than Porsches. I don’t fear for any of those companies’ futures.

Seriously, HP makes butt loads of computers and, although they all have varying degrees utility, they don’t have the class, ease of use or velvety smooth performance of a Mac. Moreover, when it comes to profitability in the computer business, nobody tops Apple.

Passover meat…

Similarly, in the smartphone business, Google and its fellow travelers undoubtedly — another inspiring two-for-one handset from LG, anyone? — will “win” the commodity, unit volume game. Hey, with the malware crown all locked up, they’re well on their way and welcome to it.

Seriously, Android phones are like 12 or 16 to a pound hotdogs — there’s a reason they sell for $0.89. There’re even more compelling reasons why Apple has a single digit share of the cellphone market and still brings home the lion’s share of the profits.

And, here’s a news flash. I bet there are lot more people employed making white bread — compensated accordingly — than the artisanal whole grain variety, too. That doesn’t make me wanna drive a Tata, which I’m sure are fine automobiles in the same way hotdogs are meat…

What’s your take?

    What an idiotic article…..

  2. Ken Berger:

Look at real interpolation of the developer playing field, there have been and are many more people developing for iOS than for Android, now that android is on the MAP (just look at Net Applications to see that in terms of real surfing iOS has a 4 to 5 x lead over Android) mainstream players are porting their iOS apps to Android, so they need developers.
Job listings are for companies expanding their shops not for startups or single person/small development groups. It would be like saying that there are more job listings for clothing stores than food stores so one is growing and the other is dying.
This not only show a lack on knowledge of the tech industry but a lack of knowledge of how our economy works.

appel is building a wall around itself so high, that it wont be able to climb out.
