Apple confirms late iOS 5 release

March 28, 2011

In previous years, Apple’s held a Spring press event where it unveils what new iOS features and seeds a developer beta. With this morning’s Worldwide Developer Conference announcement, which will be held right on schedule, that chain of events has apparently been usurped.

Apple has announced that its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) June 6 through June 10 at San Francisco’s Moscone West where developers will get a “preview” of what’s coming in Mac OS X Lion and iOS, one presumes, version 5.

“At this year’s conference we are going to unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS,” said Philip Schiller, senior vice president, Worldwide Product Marketing. “If you are an iOS or Mac OS X software developer, this is the event that you do not want to miss.”

    • • More than 100 technical sessions presented by Apple engineers on a wide range of technology-specific topics for developing, deploying and integrating the latest iOS and Mac OS technologies;

      • Over 1,000 Apple engineers providing developers with code-level assistance, insight into optimal development techniques, and guidance on how they can make the most of iOS and Mac OS technologies in their apps;

      • The opportunity to connect with thousands of fellow iPad, iPhone and Mac developers from around the world; and
      Apple Design Awards which recognize iPad, iPhone and Mac apps that demonstrate technical excellence, innovation and outstanding design.

That’s the non-news. The real news is that Apple won’t, as it has in 2008, 2009 and 2010, be holding a Spring iOS preview event.

Thereupon, the omission of the preview media event rather strongly suggests that we won’t be getting iOS 5 in the traditional June/July timeframe — there just isn’t time. This is confirmation, in an off-handed way, of an earlier rumor that Apple’s fifth generation mobile operating system, which is expected to feature mucho cloud goodness, won’t be around until the Fall.

Because Apple’s “delaying” iOS 5 in order to push out Mac OS X Lion in the Summer, as a Mac user that makes me I’m happy.

Good for you, too?
