And, no iPhone 5 either

March 29, 2011

By now we’ve all read the apparently well-source rumors that iOS 5 won’t be arriving until the Fall. Now, fresh whispers claim the iPhone 5 won’t ship, as has been tradition, at or soon after this year’s Worldwide Developer Conference nor will any new Mac hardware — sigh.

When it comes to rumors, few can top Jim Dalrymple’s — MacCentral, Macworld, LoopInsight — record of success. Thereupon, he’s saying that this year’s Worldwide Developer Conference won’t see any Mac or iPhone hardware introductions — just software.

“You get caught up in patterns, and it holds true, until it doesn’t,” Gartner analyst Michael Gartenberg said. “There is no reason for Apple to follow a predictable yearly pattern, and it keeps their competition off guard a little bit.”

Blorge reported last week that iOS 5 isn’t expected until the Fall. Given that Apple has publicly said Mac OS X Lion, the first major desktop operating system rewrite in three years, is coming this Summer, it’s not surprising the company has pushed back its annual mobile OS release.

However, given the February launch of the Verizon (CDMA-only) iPhone 4, it’s perhaps not surprising that Apple’s stretching its iPhone 5 and iOS 5 delivery schedules. Further, it’s abundantly clear that Android, neither smartphone nor tablet, isn’t going to be taking over the world anytime soon…

What’s your take?
