iPhone number one where it counts

April 23, 2011

Here’s a slice of mobile handset business data that nicely frames the question, “Who’s the biggest?” Whereas you can count the widgets, something Android fans never seem to tire of doing, you can also let the dollars do the talking, which is what business is all about.

Apple sells a lot of iPhones. The ragamuffin slew of companies that produce Android handsets can claim even bigger numbers.

However, the absolute unit volume leader is Nokia. Nevertheless, none of these competitors generates more cash than Apple.

Quoting Strategy Analytics market data, All Things D reports that Apple ($11.9 billion) has — a feat that took less than four years — surpassed Nokia ($9.4 billion) to become the world’s biggest phone maker by revenue last quarter. Interestingly enough, the Finnish company sold more than five times as many devices as Apple, 108.5 million versus 18.6 million, last quarter.

Thereupon, Nokia’s average selling price was $87 last quarter and Apple’s was $638, and that makes all of the difference. And, never mind Apple’s App Store money machine…

What’s your take?

Love android flexibility! That’s what it’s all about. I need a phone that is more than an app launcher, and but a full operating system capable of all thatflexibility. Full voice commands for testing, and emails, web sites is just one of many options. Love android!

^^^ seems you have never jailbroken an iPhone before…. Makes the iPhone as flexible if not more than Android. Hell more than half the customization features of ‘Android’ were available years before on the Jailbroken iPhone and are directly ripped from Cydia onto android. I can’t believe people think that adding custom ROMs via emulators and adding themes was something Android created when it was available the day iPhone got jailbroken (years before Google even thought of stepping into the market).

I love how Android fanboys always bring in ‘ ooh Android sold more units than iPhone!!! Apple is so dead Android is gonna rule!!’ failing to realize that Android doesn’t bring in Google a fraction of profit to what the iPhone brings with it’s devices and iOS app store. 12 Billion in 1 Quarter!!

In the end it’s always about profit… Android can sell 10-20 phones, but 1 iPhone rakes in more profit for Apple than those combined.
