No Map app upgrade in iOS 5

May 29, 2011

When the original iPhone shipped back in 2007, the Maps app was pretty good. Now, however, it’s just old and, to an increasing degree, embarrassing. How can the iPhone, which is arguably the best smartphone available, not have an at least passable, turn-by-turn map app?

Apple owns plenty of mapping juice having purchased Poly9 and Placebase in recent years and there have been plenty of rumors indicating a Cupertino created mobile mapping service is in the works. Nevertheless, 9 to 5 Google reports that iOS 5, which is expected to be previewed at June’s Worldwide Developer Conference and ship in September, will continue to use the same Google Maps backend that we’re using right now.

[A]lthough Apple is working to improve the iOS Maps application, iOS 5 will not bring an Apple developed maps service and Google Maps is still in. Besides Apple’s purchase of both Placebase and Poly9, some speculated that Apple is building their own maps service to either compete with Google or step away from their input into iOS.

And that’s where we’ve been, stuck in a rut and waiting, for the last few years.

Ready for an all-new, super cool Maps app?

There are turn-by-turn apps for iPhone/iPad like free WAZE or paid iGO and others.
