iPhone 4S is familiar inside and out

August 26, 2011

Triangulation. Whereas there’s no direct method to figure out what Apple’s up to, we do get a regular stream of hints and here’s one of the more convincing ones. Further, Given that past is often prologue for the Cupertino, California-based iPhone maker, it seems reasonable to expect that the 3GS will be replaced by the 4S.

Bring down the cost and price it to sell. That was Apple’s strategy with the 8GB-only iPhone 3GS.

We have increasing confirmation that Apple will pursue the same approach with the iPhone 4, which is expected to launch alongside the iPhone 5 sometime during the next month or so.

MacRumors has published an image purportedly of the iPhone 4S’ frame and that seems to indicate changes are afoot the antenna.

This image shows that the iPhone 4S will have two antenna breaks at the bottom of the casing. This differs from both the AT&T (GSM) iPhone 4 and Verizon (CDMA) iPhone 4. Why is this important?

The reason for the movement of the antenna breaks is to accommodate different frequencies of the different mobile technologies. This “iPhone 4S” appears to have a slot for a SIM card, suggesting that at a minimum it will support the GSM standard like the original AT&T iPhone 4. It is believed the iPhone 5 will support both GSM and CDMA, but we haven’t heard anything definitive about the band support for this iPhone 4S.

When the iPhone 4 was released, haters spawned antennagate, a controversy over the device’s perceived antenna and reception flaws. Obviously, there wasn’t much factual about these attacks as the iPhone has gone on to become the world’s best selling smartphone.

However, that doesn’t mean there wasn’t room for improvement and Apple is apparently taking the lessons to heart.

The pulse quickens…

Personally, I’m really hoping reports that Sprint will begin selling the iPhone this Fall are true — I’d love to a a low-cost, perhaps even unlocked iPhone on a prepaid data plan…

What’s your take?
