How to save a PDF directly to iBooks

August 31, 2011

How do you use your iPhone, iPod touch and/or iPad? One of coolest, and unheralded, uses I’ve found is putting manuals on my iDevices, which saves on printing, keeps ‘em handy and backed up. Here’s how to take a PDF manual or whatever and save to iBooks.

So, you brought an Ikea flatpack desk, chair, table, lamp, whatever and the manual came out of the box mangled, barely legible. Well, download assembly instructions from Ikea to your iPhone or iPad, and get to work.

Yeah, you can just open a PDF in Mobile Safari, but it disappears as soon as you navigate to another page or close that tab. Let’s make it a little more permanent.

Open the PDF in Safari and with a single finger tap the screen. As shown above, a button bar with “Open in” will appear at the top of the browser window — just tap “Open in iBooks.”

It’s just that easy. Additional iBook benefits include the ability to search and bookmark pages.

When Apple added PDF support in iBooks, it was a huge boon to users who hadn’t yet sprung for a standalone, third-party reader. But did you know that you can add files directly to this PDF library from Safari on the iPad? Simply open a PDF in Safari and tap the page – at the top you’ll see a button to “Open in iBooks,” which will automatically add the document to your library. Starting in iOS 5, you’ll also be able to take advantage of this feature on your iPhone or iPod touch, making the process of adding a PDF to your iBooks library far more streamlined.

Now there is an app to create PDFs in iOS :

    Adobe CreatePDF

I like to save long articles directly to ePub and then open in iBooks (or your reader of choice).

    1) Go to http://dotepub.com/
    2) Follow the directions on your iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch to install a java bookmarklet
    3) Go to a web page that you’d like to read (e.g., an academic journal article)
    4) Load your bookmark
    5) Open in your reader, and enjoy!

This works with password protected sites, the Gutenberg project texts, and lots of other websites. If you like reading the ePub format, this is a quick and dirty way to save them on your iDevice.
