Apple’s next major mobile operating system update is almost here and it’s got new apps, services and will take more space. So, when Tuesday, October 4 rolls around will your iPhone and/or iPad be ready? Take a few minutes and get rid of the old apps, unwatched movies, forgotten photos to make space for the good things to come.

Apple will be making iPhone next announcements on Tuesday, October 4 and it’s overwhelmingly likely that Tim Cook will lead an ensemble cast on stage at the company’s 1 Infinite Loop headquarters where the event will be held. That’s all very well and nice, but when can I get one?

Apple bought Siri and its voice technology to finally bring this long-anticipated functionality to the iPhone and now everybody’s talking about Assistant, the until now known but unnamed voice control feature in iOS 5. However, left unmentioned are the tens of millions of devices that will be left behind.

As brands go, Apple is perhaps unrivaled in terms of consumer loyalty. Maybe Coca-Cola does better, probably not. Whether it’s computers of the traditional variety or the latest newfangled mobile device, current Apple users overwhelmingly say they will get a newer, better, faster from Apple when it comes time to buy again.

How far from home do you have to be and not be overheard? For anyone directly associated with Apple, I expect the answer is not on this planet. And, exactly what iPhones will we be getting this year? Although one shouldn’t discount Apple’s ability to surprise, a consensus has emerged that the brightest, shiniest iPhone has been “delayed” until 2012, assuming we’re all here to get it.

Microsoft has already said it won’t release an updated Zune and other media player competitors are equally moribund. What does this mean for Apple’s iPod line? For the foreseeable future, we won’t be seeing much, if any, real innovation.

If your iOS development model can be summarized by the words “show me the money,” then you need to sit up and pay attention. Whereas last year at this time paid apps accounted for the lion’s share of the cash, freemium is the new black and savvy developers are coding appropriately.

Straight from the horse’s mouth and the number four filly in the US smartphone race looks to lag even farther behind. The carrier is leaving the door open vis-a-vis 2012 — the world’s going to end anyway, so why not say it? — but they won’t be getting when the iPhone 5 launches sometime next month.

The world’s slimmest smartphone is still the iPhone 4 and what exactly does Samsung have to do catch a break from a judge or any other government official? Whatever the case, it’s Apple’s world and the rest of us just pay royalties to live in it and ain’t nothing changing that.
