Ready for iOS 5? Demungify your iPhone
Apple’s next major mobile operating system update is almost here and it’s got new apps, services and will take more space. So, when Tuesday, October 4 rolls around will your iPhone and/or iPad be ready? Take a few minutes and get rid of the old apps, unwatched movies, forgotten photos to make space for the good things to come.
It’s a simple formula — clean, organize, back up. And, it’s not going to take much time or effort, and the pay off’s immediate.
Clean

Before demugnifying your idevice, you need to first back up your stuff. Fire up iTunes, connect your iPad, select in the left sidebar, right click and choose Transfer Purchases.
Next, Sync — just do it (go get something to drink).
Now, really, a fart app? How many news readers do you actually use? Or, put another way, which do you actually listen to — music streaming app Pandora or all 33 tracks in Bryan Adams Anthology that you’ve been carrying around since 2007-8-9-10?
Likewise, turn a prejudiced eye to what movies and TV shows are on your iPhone, and don’t think twice about getting rid of stuff you’ve already watched — open the iPod or Video apps and give ‘em a swipe and tap delete.
To remove apps, tap and hold an app until it starts to jiggle and then tap the little “X” while saying goodbye. You can do this anywhere — bus, train, bed, the couch.
You can also remove apps, music, movies and more when the device is tethered to your computer — click the “X” for apps or highlight and delete for media.
Lastly, don’t forget the photos. Whether you do it on your idevice or in iTunes, go through and remove.
Organize

I don’t have many good habits, but this one. The scores apps on my iPad are organized in folders on just two screens, which saves time because I always know where freshly download apps will appear — everything in its place and a place for everything.
Apple makes this really easy. For example, if you drag a game onto another game, iOS will create a folder for you and name it “Games.” Similarly, dragging Apple’s Pages writing app onto Keynote will create a folder called “Productivity”.
Again, you can do your organizing on the iPhone, but getting it done in iTunes on your computer with its bigger display and convenient pointing device is easier.
However you get it done the purpose here is to reduce clutter and the time it takes to find things.
Back it up [again]
Now, let’s do it one more time, connect the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad to your computer and Sync! The purpose here is to make sure your current configuration and content is backed up — you can’t get it back if it isn’t backed up.
Now, are you ready for iOS 5?
