iPod classic: This time it really is goodbye
Apple’s original click-wheel iPod has been passé at least since 2007 and the advent of the iPhone. Although earlier reports of its imminent demise were greatly exaggerated, recently we’ve been hearing convincing whispers that the world changing device is going the way of the dodo.
Developers with access to betas of Apple’s upcoming mobile operating system rewrite, iOS 5, have been saying for weeks that the iPod icon is gone, lending credence to rumors that the iPod classic will be discontinued. Now, Apple’s sent another unambiguous signal that the end is nigh.
AppleInsider reports that the mothership has removed the “iPod Click Wheel Games” link from the iTunes Store — previously clicking the App Store drop offered the option, but that it’s gone now.
That said, with the writing clearly on the wall, I wonder if Apple will delay announcing the iPod classic’s demise until at least October 23 — the 10th anniversary of it introduction? I’m guessing they’ll keep selling them until existing stocks run out…
