So, the iPhone 4S didn’t live up to the iPhone 5 hype — bull cookies. Whereas I was underwhelmed by Tim Cook et al’s keynote delivery — obviously the team was under the cloud of Steve Jobs’ impending demise — it was clear that the total package was going to be transformative. Initial sales of the device back up that assertion in a big, big way.

Well over a year after they committed the theft and profited from the sale of a pilfered iPhone 4 prototype, the pair have received what can only be described as light punishment. However, with convictions secured, will Apple now turn on Gizmodo publisher Gawker?

First there was the buzz generated by Apple’s onstage demos. Exciting, yes, but often not a good indicator of how features will behave in the wild. However, as a lucky few users lay hands on the iPhone 4S, iOS 5 and, more to the point, Siri, unfounded optimism is transitioning firmly into, “Holy cow, it really is that cool.”

One of the things we learn about iPhone launches, often months after the fact, is how many units Apple prepared ahead of time. Last time around, 1.7 million iPhone 4s shipped in the device’s first three days and long lines of people queuing outside Apple Stores dominated the news cycle. It looks like that’s how Cupertino’s playing it again this time.

In retrospect, it’s obvious why Tim Cook et al seemed a tad flat during Tuesday’s iPhone 4S introduction — Apple co-founder, CEO and all-around genius, Steve Jobs, was on the brink of death. Now, that the back story is clear and the fog of grief is parting just a little, iOS’ big new (and until now unheralded) feature deserves another look.

One of the first things Steve Jobs did when returned to the company he cofounded was he got rid of a lot of superfluous products. Today, Apple doubled down on “not much to announce” by not killing the iPhone 3GS. And, although we weren’t expecting much vis-a-vis the iPod, we got almost nothing — all of this leaves me asking, “What’s for Christmas?”
