The mothership has gotten heat from developers and pundits over its apparent inaction vis-a-vis app piracy, a problem observers say has only gotten worse in recent months. Although criticism of Apple is unlikely to subside, the biggest iOS pirate site has been pushed off shore and the problem has moved to countries ‘that do not have copyright laws.’

Remember when the original iPhone came out sans 3G and lots of self-described smart people pooh-poohed Apple’s smartphone because it wasn’t cutting edge? Ultimately, Cupertino’s wisdom in making that decision was borne out because in 2007 3G just wasn’t there. We’re seeing a similar chain of events playing out now.

Even the curmudgeonly Apple analysts are predicting iPhone sales in the 30 million unit range for the fourth quarter and that translates into millions given as gifts. If that means you, although you can certainly download games for a bit of fun, perhaps the most entertaining feature of your brand spanking new iPhone 4S came built in.

Google’s Andy Rubin claims that 700,000 Android handsets get activated every day. While that’s a lot phones, users seem to be only using them as — surprise, surprise — dumb devices. Thereupon, no better proof of this is Apple iOS’s near complete dominance of mobile shopping with fresh statistics showing more than 90 percent of the over 3 billion sessions tracked originated from an iPhone or iPad.

It is a victory for the Cupertino kids, but only just. Because the International Trade Commission threw out a second finding of patent infringement against the Taiwanese cellphone maker and thereby narrowed the final ruling to a single relatively minor patent, it’s unlikely that any HTC devices will ever be blocked from the US market.

An almost surreal war of words has been playing out over the last few days. The iPhone changed everything. iPad changed, or at the very least boosted, everything. A proof thereof is the fact that news reading on the iPhone was kludgey at best and just as likely to induce a headache. However, Apple’s tablet really changed mobile news reading and now the innovation’s coming back to the source.
