Holiday iPhone buyers go high capacity

January 24, 2012

And, Apple tallies very nice margins as a result. Further, well over one third of iPhone buyers came from another platform. With Apple preparing to deliver fiscal results for the holiday quarter on Tuesday, perhaps the only meaningful question still unanswered is how good it will all turn out.

First off, the great majority of amateur and professional analysts say they expect Apple to card record Mac sales in the last frame of 2011, with a fair amount of that success enterprise customers — who would’ve thunk?

Bolstering the swelling body of evidence that the Cupertino kids will deliver yet another stellar holiday quarter is fresh market research from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP). Therein, a survey of buyers has revealed that 21 percent of iPhone buyers purchased the 64GB version of the iPhone 4S. The big with that is you can buy a 64GB USB Flash drive (a different animal to be sure) for about $70 and Apple charges a $200 premium for the privilege, that’s money in the bank.

Another interesting data point? They discovered 36 percent of iPhone buyers came from Android, Blackberry, etc — that’s huge. All the more so because CIRP previously pegged switchers at 18 percent of iPhone buyers.

With Apple expected to report 30-plus million iPhone units last quarter, the company will have added millions of customers that used buy smartphone mades by somebody else — they tried the competition and then thought better of it, opting for an iPhone instead.

And, best of all? More than 80 percent of the old iPhones — 64 percent of iPhone buyers were return customers — didn’t get landfilled. Yes, they get handed down or resold on the secondary market.

Christmas 2011 was huge for the iPhone and Apple…
