iOS App Store payouts pass $4 billion

January 25, 2012

Apple opened the App Store back on July 10, 2008 with the promise to developers that they would keep 70 percent of whatever price they chose to charge for their apps. Since then, an entire new industry sprang up to meet the needs of iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users, as well as take a stab at getting rich and some did.

Yesterday, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer told analysts (11:25) that the company has paid iOS developers more than $4 billion — about $5.71 billion total revenue — since the App Store opened about three-and-a-half years ago. Just working with round numbers, that works out to about $0.22 for each of the 18 billion downloads to date.

Apple first noted App Store payouts back in June 2010 when the company said it had delivered $1 billion in commissions to developers. They next time payouts got a mention was Summer 2011 with $2.5 billion paid.

However, payout growth has only continued to accelerate since then — Apple wrote checks for $700,000 last quarter alone.

With 315 million iOS devices — iPhone, iPod touch and iPad — already sold, it’s rather clear that App Store revenues will continue rapidly grow. In fact, whereas iPhone growth hit the hockey stick curve back in 2009, accelerating again when the iPad shipped in April 2010, App Store revenues are now in the same growth phase.

Looks like the good times are just getting started…
