iPhone 5 preorders start September 12

August 14, 2012

After Apple announces its iPhone 5 on September 12, loyal Apple enthusiasts will be able to preorder the much-anticiapted device.

iMore’s well-connected Rene Ritchie received confirmation from his insider sources that Apple’s next-generation iPhone will indeed be available for preorder the same day that Apple is set to announce the new smartphone.

Ritchie’s rumors have proven to be accurate in the past. He also broke the news about the Sept. 12 announcement day and the expected release day nine days on Sept. 21.

What isn’t clear is if Apple will also release its new smaller tablet — the iPad Mini — on Sept. 21. The 7.85-inch tablet that is expected to heavily compete against Amazon’s, Barnes & Noble’s and Google’s lineup of tablets is expected to be announced alongside the iPhone 5 and the new mobile operating system, iOS 6.

The Boy Genius Report published a report today that said AT&T employees have been asked to be prepared for an “all-hands-on-deck” effort from mid- to late-September to mid-October, which would line up with the rumored release dates.

The iPhone 5 is expected to be completely redesigned with a taller, 4-inch screen and a slimmer body. One of the other notable features on the design is the expected two-tone metal back, which could help with any reception issues (remember AntennaGate?). The connecter dock on the iPhone 5 is also expected to be smaller with anywhere from 8-15 pins, down from the 30 that we’ve been used to since 2003.

On the inside of the new iPhone is a quad-core A6 processor, 4G LTE cellular capability and 1 GB of RAM, making it one of the most — or the most — powerful smartphone on the market.

The iPhone 5 will first be released in the United States and then offered internationally in the first week of October, a common practice by Apple.

We now have less than a month until the big announcement. Are you ready?

So if Apple pulls another late release again, all of the people who pre-ordered their iPhones early… won’t get them? I’m excited for the release, but all of these dates seem are just guesses.
