Mo’ better Siri coming in iOS 5.1

November 17, 2011

The iPhone 4S’ multifarious battery issues are on the whole solved and Apple’s promising a fix for the remainder, as well as Calendar, etc. problems that the last patch promulgated. However, the bigger piece of news is that iOS 5′s meme generating digital assistant, Siri, will gain new languages, as well as commands for wifi, Bluetooth and maps.

A pity Jobs didn’t get his wish

November 15, 2011

Once upon a time, Apple cofounder and erstwhile CEO Steve Jobs considered building his own wireless network, using unlicensed wifi spectrum, rather than pairing up with one of the existing carriers. Obviously that didn’t come about, but oh to wonder at what could have been.

3D maps coming to the iPhone

October 30, 2011

Apple’s dumping Google (and has been for some years now). Eventually some variation on that theme will occur with the most likely candidate being mapping — boy, oh boy, the iPhone needs a new Maps app. The Cupertino kids have taken another step down that road as we learned they’ve purchased yet another company for mapping technology.

Fresh iPhone 5, iPhone 4S sightings

October 2, 2011

In the internet age, everyone’s a source. Thereupon, the developer references, code snippets and placeholder pages are being bandied about as evidence for and against the existence of various iPhone models that, until Apple says otherwise, don’t exist.

iPhone next: The past ends here

September 26, 2011

Apple bought Siri and its voice technology to finally bring this long-anticipated functionality to the iPhone and now everybody’s talking about Assistant, the until now known but unnamed voice control feature in iOS 5. However, left unmentioned are the tens of millions of devices that will be left behind.

iPhone 4S next month, iPhone 5 next year

September 22, 2011

How far from home do you have to be and not be overheard? For anyone directly associated with Apple, I expect the answer is not on this planet. And, exactly what iPhones will we be getting this year? Although one shouldn’t discount Apple’s ability to surprise, a consensus has emerged that the brightest, shiniest iPhone has been “delayed” until 2012, assuming we’re all here to get it.

White iPod touch, and unicorns, coming in October

September 21, 2011

Microsoft has already said it won’t release an updated Zune and other media player competitors are equally moribund. What does this mean for Apple’s iPod line? For the foreseeable future, we won’t be seeing much, if any, real innovation.

From a trickle to a torrent, iPhone 5 production ramps

September 8, 2011

The worldwide supply chain and global machinery complex that is the iPhone 5 is now in motion, says a fresh rumor from the Silicon Isle. The initial numbers are impressive with daily production already at 150,000 units and shipments for this month alone to hit up to 6 million. Nevertheless, it won’t be enough.

Sprint, Deutsche Telecom gearing up for iPhone 5

September 6, 2011

Is Apple’s next generation smartphone coming rather sooner than later? All sorts of signs, including some contradictory ones, have come to light in recent days as the mothership and its partners around the world gear up for the release of the iPhone.

Not again! Apple lost another iPhone prototype

September 1, 2011

No police report has been filed in this particular incident, but the details are already familiar. An apple employee, hopefully not Gray Powell, left an iPhone 5 prototype in a San Francisco “tequila lounge” whereafter it might have been sold on Craigslist. I’m guessing Gizmodo wasn’t the buyer.
